Recently I got a chance to hang out with the folks at Cerberus Moto in San Diego, CA. Cerberus is a co-op garage with a homey feel and a wealth of knowledge within it’s walls.

Inside I met Dave Hargreaves – co-founder, master mechanic, and chief technical officer if there were such a position. I also met Jennifer Gardner – Dave’s partner, Cerberus co-founder and the shop’s driving force and community outreach specialist.

We talked and toured the shop for five hours, nearly two of which are on tape. They proudly showed off the shop and it’s accomplishments like seasoned athletes showing off a trophy collection.
With a “Yeah, that’s cool- but look at this!” sort of approach to introducing me to all of the goodies and projects going on, I could tell that the devil is in the details with these two.
It really shows when you start to look at the small items of significance stuffed around the nooks and crannies of the shop.

Instead of fawning all over Athena, a gorgeous XS Scrambler that was a commissioned build for WD-40®, they wanted to show me their pet crawfish and radical vapor honer. The bikes are things that they and the members are proud of, but they are not the most important things in the shop. That would be the people.

As we continued to talk and I learned more about the members and the family that Dave and Jennifer have created, I realized that Cerberus is more about community and learning than it is purely about motorcycles.

In our interview you can hear the sense of commitment, community, and passion that the crew has for teaching others how to do things for themselves. We talked about it at length in the show.
They also find an incredible sense of fulfillment when they can unite a doctor, a chef, an elevator repairman and others whose paths would virtually never cross, via the garage and their mutual love for customizing and wrenching on motorbikes.

In the interview Dave and Jennifer share their humble beginnings, past struggles and future dreams for the shop and the motorcycling community as a whole. There’s a great plan in the future, and if you’re smart enough to keep them in your orbit, you just might be lucky enough to be a part of it too.
