Creative Riding Episode 360 – The Goat is Real

Introduction to episode: Although some references go back to the 1800s, the mechanical steed is not a new concept. The 1940 film “The Thief of Bagdad” features a mechanical “clockwork” horse that is gifted to the protagonist. The Beano, a British comic strip from the 40s also featured a boy and his robotic horse, the premise of which was set in the middle ages. Other movies and films from the onset of the sci-fi genre in the 50s and 60s have also featured mechanical steeds. But to my knowledge, no other nation has taken the robotic or mecha animal to task quite like Japan. 1994’s B’t X featured robotic horses that allowed the riders to breathe in space. Since the early 80s there have been no shortage of other films, animated series, manga, etc that have used animal companions, and specifically robotic mounts. The bridge between art and life was crossed a few years ago by Kawasaki Heavy Industries with the showcase of Bex, their robotic ibex in 2022. There are of course several robotic animals, including the terrifying Boston Dynamics BigDog and LS3, but none to my knowledge are being marketed as a means of transportation – yet. Starting April 13 2025, the Osaka-Kansai Expo will kick off a nearly half year exposition of the world’s leading transportation and future thought processes, including Kawasaki’s CORLEO concept, which undoubtedly had its origins in the Bex concept.
