Germany’s ban on gas/diesel in 2030

I’ve read it all over the internet today. It started with a blurb from an Investment website that I have used to track stocks, but now it’s everywhere. EVERYWHERE!!!!

The Bundesrat is one of Germany’s legislative bodies which is usually described as being an upper house of Parliament similar to the US Senate,  Canadian Senate, or British House of Lords.  Although the Bundesrat doesn’t set policy across Europe, it is very influential.

That very influential body has fired a shot across the bow of the automobile industry, and in their own back yard to boot, calling for a ban on the production of gasoline and diesel engines in the year 2030. After that, only zero emission vehicles will be approved for manufacture, and possibly road use.

According to SeekingAlpha.com “The non-binding resolution will place more pressure on the European Commission to promote zero-emission mobility” and goes on to say that the measure could explain the recent push by Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes to develop electric technologies.

This might also explain BMW’s release of the Vision Next 100 concept package, and the reasoning that it could be viable to address mobility needs within the next 30 years.

The resolution calls for the European Union to follow in step, but there is no guarantee that the influential Bundesrat’s policy will be adopted.  On the other hand-Why not?
If the tax structure is revisited as some suggest, the tax breaks making diesel and gas so affordable compared to electric vehicle pricing could edge consumers closer to the the alternative vehicle options.
