New bracket fab

Ordinary riders doing extraordinary things

New bracket fab

I initially used very mild steel as a bracket for the RC51-style tail light. Vibrations and wear led to the tab on the bracket breaking at the spot weld. Perhaps next time I would weld all the way around the tab. That might just make the tab break off at the top of the bracket?

Instead of welding another mild steel tab, I used a piece of thicker gauge aluminum. Can’t weld it to steel but I can paint the two metals to avoid galvanic corrosion and bolt them together.

If I were to do it again, to save weight I’d probably make the entire bracket out of aluminum, and design an ‘A’ shaped bracket that was a single piece. Lighter, stronger and prettier. The hardest part is making the mounting holes accurate when doing it all by hand.
