The Flying Doctor – An entertaining view of the crash

I love road racing -not “road racing” on a track styled to be like a road, although I do love that too, but actual racing on closed public roads.

While I was perusing You(biquitous)Tube for some good road racing porn, I came across a presentation and memorial of sorts to Doctor John Hinds.

From his TED talk-like presentation (below) on roadside medical procedures and crash injury analysis, I gathered that this guy was probably fun to talk to, had a great sense of humor, and was probably the first person that you wanted to see through your visor after a high-speed get off.

A quote from a MCN article following his tragic death sums up his achievements and contributions to the road racing world and beyond:

He leaves behind an incredible legacy; as an exceptionally talented doctor to whom many of the paddock owe their lives; as an educator who worked tirelessly to further trauma and emergency medicine; and as a selfless individual and much-loved figure who dedicated a lot of his own free time and money to ensuring proper care for the paddock.

Most of his time was taken up by his passion for motorbikes and caring for people, but his extra time was spent procuring air ambulance services for Northern Ireland. A petition and fund was set up in his honor for that very cause after his passing.

Although I just became aware of this individual, the video is a timeless, entertaining and lighthearted view into what it was like to be a road racing doctor, and a keen observer of the unexpected and absurd on the ‘track’.

-Cheers!
